Chess of the Gods

8x8x8 chess, rebuilt from a 20-year-old Java project into a modern Android game.

A legacy game-logic project became a published Android release with more dimensions, more decisions, and less mercy.

The story

Chess of the Gods began as an old Java Swing program from roughly 20 years ago. The modern Android version preserves the original game logic, rebuilds the experience for mobile, and turns a long-running side project into a published release.

Why it matters

The project shows the unglamorous parts that make a side project real: preserving old game logic, adapting it for mobile, packaging it, polishing it, and getting it through release.

Build notes

  • Legacy Java origin with modern Android/Kotlin adaptation.
  • Published app experience, including packaging and release flow.
  • Game logic carried forward while the interface became mobile-friendly.
  • AI-assisted development used as leverage, not as a substitute for judgment.
